The Top 5 Things We've Learned During our First Year of Business

Hey guys! We are SOOOOOO excited you are here and are seeing our new website.

While we loved our first website, we have grown so much in our first year of business that we wanted our site to really reflect who we feel we are today and be able to grow with us! We worked with @karima.creative to design our new site and she was able to capture our vision and brand just perfectly. We hope you love it as much as we do. We will be updating it often and continuing to blog as well so make sure you continue to visit the site and see what we are up to and the incredible projects we are working on.

Since we are celebrating the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of The Home Sanctuary we would like to give a huge shout out THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us this first year. You all have been our cheerleaders, supporters, and believers and have helped make this a great first trip around the sun for THS. We thought it would be fun to do a giveaway basket of goodies to get you ready for the fall. Items range from a cozy throw blanket and candle, to our favorite spices and treats from Trader Joe’s. All you have to do is sign-up through our email list on our home page. That’s it, and the winner will be announced Monday, October 22nd.

While we have worked to update our website and brand, we have spent a lot of time reflecting over all things THS, so for this blog we thought it would be appropriate to share the top 5 things we have learned during our first year of business:

  • There is no one size fits all approach to organizing. After being in so many people’s homes and personal spaces, we quickly realized that each person's space is so unique and different-- and we truly try to celebrate all of these original spaces! Each job inevitably becomes a sort of puzzle--we fit all the pieces together to make each project individualized for each client. What works for some may not work for all. What works for most may not work for all. It is such an incredible learning opportunity.

  • SOCIAL MEDIA IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR SMALL BUSINESSES! Whew, has this ever been a learning curve for us! We might be great organizers, but that does not make us good at the digital world. We have made lots of mistakes and feel like it is a continual learning process. Despite our shortcomings, we are so thankful for social media and the opportunities it has brought us! Not to mention all of the rockstar female entrepreneurs we have connected with, locally and nationally!

  • It is so important to celebrate all successes- big and small. We were given this important advice from another entrepreneur early on and we have quickly realized why! Even the small ones are big ones for small businesses just getting their start. It is easy to feel doubt, but it really is motivating when you celebrate those successes and are really conscious about how far you’ve come! Tip: when you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a second to look away from the to-do list and make a “done” list. You will feel so empowered once you are able to see everything you’ve accomplished in writing in front of you!

  • It is so good to understand you and your business partners’ strengths and weaknesses and work those to the best of your abilities. We have definitely learned a lot about each other! When you spend 8 hours a day with one person, you learn their ins and outs pretty quickly! It is so strange how the universe brought us together and how we are so similar, but also a great yin and yang. We have different strengths and that really helps us know our roles. Katie tends to be more OCD about the details once the job is close to finished, so it is her job to fine tune. While Katie is fine-tuning the project, Kari is making all of the labels since she has the better handwriting and spelling skills! We are drawn to the same clothes, the same foods (we often alternate who packs the lunches), and we both appreciate the importance of self-care (believe it or not, this line of work takes A LOT of physical and mental strength).

  • Outsourcing work and delegating tasks is key- so you can focus on your own business growth. One of the first things we did was hire an accountant and someone to help with marketing and those investments have paid off ten-fold! If you aren’t willing to invest in your own business- why should you expect anyone else to invest in YOU? That was a key piece of advice we got right off the bat (that we are so thankful for!)

Overall, we love what we do and are so crazy thankful for the stars aligning, bringing the two of us together, and for the birth of The Home Sanctuary. We cannot wait to see what our second year brings!
