Kari's Deck/Patio Refresh

Every homeowner has one. The much dreaded list of projects that need to be done around the house… cleaning out gutters, power washing the house, laying new mulch, fixing a  leaky pipe, painting the front door, and the list usually goes on and on. Am I right? I challenge you to fine ONE homeowner without said list!

My husband and I tackled one of these projects over the weekend and, man oh man, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! As much as we were dreading it, it’s crazy to be finished! Afterwards, my immediate thought was WHY IN THE WORLD DID WE WAIT TWO YEARS to do what literally took us one day to complete?

Well, here's why. We did a complete renovation of the interior of our house when we bought it a couple of years ago. You can see the renovation videos here, here and here. Because of the massive amount of work we did on the inside, naturally the outside of the house fell to the wayside. Sometimes you just can’t do it all (insert sigh!), you need a break, or you feel like you cannot make ONE MORE decision. Let’s not even begin to discuss the cost of some of these projects (insert another sigh!).

When we purchased our home we made big plans to redo the entire deck and backyard. Fast forward two years, and we were in desperate need to finally show the outside of the house some TLC.  Since a huge backyard overhaul is still not within our budget, we decided to bite the bullet and bring the old deck back to life! :)

Our deck was not in superb shape so we decided to use Rustoleum’s product called ROCKSOLID Deck Coat. It is 6x thicker than regular deck stain and it is supposed to “transform your deck in ONE day!” I will say that it certainly did that for us. The application is obviously super thick so it is supposed to only take one coat. We ended up doing two coats, but that might be due to the fact that our deck was an off-white color to start. The color we used is Autumn Brown.

The end result?!?! We finally have an area on the outside of our home that doesn’t make us feel annoyed (can I get an AMEN!). Cheers to checking this project off of our list and to many summer dinners and memories made on our refreshed deck!

Hmm...what’s next on our TO DO list you may wonder?

  • Exterior painted (yikes! But can’t wait for that to happen. We are still in the “getting quotes” phase and will NOT be doing ourselves!)

  • Driveway resurfaced

  • Replace garage door

  • New shutters

SEE WHAT I MEAN?! The fun never ends :)
